The Downeast Gleaning Initiative is a farm-based food collection and distribution project that has collected and redistributed 228,000 pounds of surplus produce to local food security organizations since 2013. Gleaning is an important food rescue activity that extends relationships between farmers and food security organizations, bringing fresh local produce choices to more community members.
You can support the Gleaning Initiative in the following ways:
- Help us harvest produce at local farms
- Deliver produce to food pantries
- Pick up produce at farms and farmers markets
- Grow and donate food!
Gleaning is an excellent way to get outside, connect with your local farmers, learn about our food system, and give back to your community. We welcome people of all experience levels and can accommodate individuals, families, school groups, employee volunteer days, summer camps, etc.
