Did you know that thousands of local adults have difficulty reading the newspaper, directions to their medications, and instructions because of low literacy? Many more aren't able to communicate with their children's teachers, employers, or healthcare professionals due to limited English Language skills. Literacy Volunteers of Bangor needs volunteers willing to help adult students to meet their learning goals, since the demand consistently outpaces the resources. We serve both adults who are learning English as another language and native speakers who struggle with reading and/or writing. Patience and a willingness to work with those who have typically been unsuccessful in traditional school settings are important characteristics for volunteers interested in teaching adults to read. Patience and respect for native cultures and customs are important qualities for volunteers interested in teaching English as another language.
Tutors do not need to have previous teaching experience; training is required. We do ask for volunteers to commit for one year, although many stay longer! Most tutors meet with their students for 1-2 hours on a weekly basis.
