Become a Volunteer Screener for the Red Cross!

In the Volunteer Screener role, you may well be the first real Red Crosser a candidate gets to talk with, and they are eager. You’ll want to seek to understand what brought prospective volunteers to the Red Cross, their areas of interest, and what positions they would find most meaningful. You’ll use your understanding from talking with the volunteer candidates to match expressed interest with the needs of the organization. Therefore, you’ll be connecting new recruits with positions for which they are both interested, well-suited, and needed.  Then you will update their status in our volunteer management system.

You can do this role remotely from your living room in Northern New England or, if you prefer, from an NNE Red Cross office near you. You’ll want to have 4 – 8 hours a week available for this role.

Looking for a way to make a meaningful impact in your local community? Look no further than the Red Cross! We have an immediate need for friendly, personable volunteers at blood drives throughout Penobscot, Piscataquis, Somerset, and Washington counties.

As a Red Cross Blood Donor Ambassador, you will:

Greet donors and assist with registration Monitor the hospitality and snack area Support the Red Cross staff  Thank donors and help save lives!

Once trained, you simply sign up online to help when and where it is convenient for you. We ask that our Blood Donor Ambassadors complete at least one 4-5 hour shift per month.

Disaster Action Team volunteers help local families cope with emergencies. 

Home fires and other disasters can occur any time, any place. As a Disaster Action Team (DAT) volunteer, you’ll provide emotional support, financial assistance, and information to help families in your community begin the process of recovery. After your initial training, your shifts will include responding to emergencies, either on the scene or coordinating remotely to provide immediate compassion and care.

The City of Lewiston has opened the Community Resiliency Center (CRC) in downtown Lewiston to provide supportive services for victims, survivors, first responders, families, and anyone in the larger community impacted by the mass violence.

Red Cross is urgently seeking volunteers for the following positions at the CRC (in-person or virtually):

Mental Health Professionals: Seeking currently licensed Mental Health professionals, school psychologists or counselors, psychiatric nurses, or retired mental health professionals. Clergy Members: Seeking board-certified chaplains, professional chaplains (paid or volunteer) and endorsed by their organizations or endorsed leaders of a local faith community or organization.

Red Cross is 90% staffed by volunteers - they are our workforce! Volunteers serve all up and down our organization and, as a recruiter, I can't do it alone for the whole state of Maine. In my role as the one and only full-time Volunteer Recruitment Specialist for the state, I need volunteers myself! How about you?

The recruitment effort takes many forms.  There's internet research, online postings, virtual events to run, tracking of progress, and even events to attend. Also, almost all of this can be done from your choice location as long as you have connectivity.  The exception would be if you want to go out in your community (like to post flyers) or decide to attend a local event for me.

This disaster season hurricanes and wildfires are predicted to be fierce. It is only thanks to teams of amazing volunteers, such as yourself, that the needs of those in harms way can be met.

Please consider joining us in a temporary volunteer position NOW and get fully trained for free. Your travel arrangement and costs, food and lodging are all cover by Red Cross. Most disaster deployments call for a 14 day commitment and ability to work multiple shifts on consecutive days. Due to the ever changing nature of large scale disasters, deployment cannot be guaranteed.

SHELTER ASSOCIATES

Work in person at a Red Cross shelter before, during, and/or after a disaster supporting day-to-day activities such as:

Reception Registration Feeding Dormitory Information collection, etc.

Provide excellent compassionate customer service be prepared to observe all safety protocols. This position requires the ability to build effective relationships with co-workers and shelter residents, strong written and verbal communication skills, physical ability to stand and/or walk for extended periods, including climbing stairs and can lift/transport supplies up to 20 pounds multiple times per shift, along with availability to complete self-paced online training.

DISASTER CASE WORKERS

Work in person to connect Disaster clients with resources, comfort and support people who are forced from their homes due to disaster.  

Provide excellent compassionate customer service Observe all safety protocols Build effective relationships with co-workers and clients Have strong written and verbal communication skills, Posses some computer skills along with the ability to complete self-paced online training

DISASTER HEALTH SERVICES ASSOCIATES

For licensed healthcare professionals only & can be a 10-day commitment if needed

Work in person in alignment with your licensure at a Red Cross shelter before, during, and/or after a disaster. Duties include:

Provide hands-on healthcare to shelter residents including assistance with daily living, wound care, incontinence care, functional needs, etc. Offer health education Help replace medications, durable equipment, and consumable supplies

This position requires an unencumbered license in medical field, strong relationship building and communications skills, along with availability to complete self-paced online training.

In disaster situation often homes are destroyed and things we take for granted--sitting on the sofa or reaching for the breakfast cereal--are a memory. Together, we can meet the needs to support those who need our help the most.  Please join us!

Perhaps the best protection against emergencies is education. The American Red Cross would much rather meet members of the community before a disaster than after. This is why we offer free programs for different ages and organizations led by Volunteer Instructors, Presenters, and Assistants. This is your opportunity to share your knowledge, to flex your teaching abilities, and to use your communications skills, all while doing your part to save lives and property. All training provided; only sign up for shifts and sessions that fit your schedule!

 

DISASTER AND EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS FOR YOUTH
Save lives and prevent injury through The Pillowcase Project. The Pillowcase Project is a national youth preparedness program offered by Red Cross regions across the country. The 40- or 60-minute presentation provides emergency preparedness education to youth in grades 3-5 (ages 8-11) in school classrooms and other settings. Numerous tools have been developed for this program including a standardized curriculum, workbook, quizzes and activities which have been carefully constructed with the help of curriculum and hazard experts. Many tools for presenters have been developed to foster consistency and fidelity to the program goals and objectives. The highly interactive presentation addresses home fire safety, a local natural hazard, psycho-social coping skills and household preparedness steps like making a plan and a kit. Team Member roles include either being a presenter, presentation assistant, administrative support, or presenter trainer!

 

DISASTER AND EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS FOR ADULTS
Be Red Cross Ready teaches people how to prepare for and respond to disasters likely to occur in their community. Participants in Hands Only CPR learn how to check for consciousness, call 911 (or the local emergency number) and give continuous chest compressions. Ready Rating helps businesses, schools, and organizations become better prepared for disasters and other emergencies. All of these are led by volunteer Presenters and Assistants.

As a blood drive volunteer in Piscataquis, Penobscot, Somerset, or Waldo county, you'll be asked to serve just once every  month. While it may not be frequent, it truly is important, and it provides a wonderful opportunity to form meaningful relationships with the donors.

Your role as a volunteer involves warmly greeting donors and ensuring their comfort during their visit. After their donation, you'll make sure they have access to refreshments and engage in friendly conversations. As they prepare to leave, you'll likely be the last Red Crosser to thank them and tell them you hope to see them next time.

If you are a people person, are at least 16 years old, and possess some computer skills to assist with donor check-in procedures, there could almost not be a better opportunity!
