Volunteer: Weekend Volunteers - Ronald McDonald House!

Volunteers make a difference in the lives of the families that come through our doors by hosting, listening and by simply being there.

Weekend Coverage Volunteers manage the daily operations at the Ronald McDonald House. Volunteers may cover a few hours, a full day or an overnight shift. Overnight volunteers have a private room and bathroom, and overnight shifts include sleep time (volunteers respond to emergencies overnight as needed). 

Volunteers chose which weekends or shifts they cover and whether they are able to cover a few hours, an overnight shift, or more. This is a great opportunity for families to volunteer together!

Responsibilities include orienting families with House services, assisting families checking in and out of the house, daily household cleaning and upkeep, front desk coverage and preparing guest rooms for new families.

Orientation and training are provided and required. A staff member is always available on call for support.

Volunteer Chefs provide meals from the heart for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Bangor while their children receive treatment at a local hospital. Your efforts will alleviate stress for families after a long day at the hospital. 

This is a great activity for individuals, families or small groups (Please note, group size is limited to 5 participants). You do not have to be a trained chef! Basic home-cooking skills are all you need. Volunteers typically make meals for 12 - 18 people. 

This program is flexible, allowing volunteers to cook a meal one time, regularly, or occasionally. The Ronald McDonald House is open 365 days a year and is looking for volunteers to help cook dinner for our families each night of the week, including weekends and holidays. Breakfast opportunities are available on Saturdays and Sundays.

Meals must be made in the kitchen at the Ronald McDonald House and cannot be prepared or cooked at home.

Volunteers assist with a variety of activities based on their preferences and skills. Volunteers may check new families into the house, provide front desk coverage, answer phones, and assist with other administrative tasks. Volunteers are here to support families by answering their questions or providing a listening ear. They also help keep the house clean and organized and restock supplies.

Volunteers work in shifts either weekly, biweekly, monthly, or occasionally. Shifts are typically 3 hours but can be flexible depending on the volunteer's availability.

Volunteer: Overnight Volunteers - with sleep time!

The Ronald McDonald House in Bangor is seeking individuals to assist with overnight shifts on occasional weeknights and/or weekends. Overnight shifts during the week begin at 9:00pm and end at 8:00am the following day. Shifts include sleep time from 11:00pm to 7:00am, as long as there are no emergencies in the house. Weekend shifts may be extended depending on the volunteer's preference. 

Volunteers arrive at 9:00pm and meet with evening shift volunteers or staff to transfer over the house. They complete closing procedures including turning off lights, ensuring doors are locked and closing the office. Volunteers check in with families to offer assistance or support as needed. Volunteers sleep in a private room with an attached bathroom. Volunteers may sleep during the overnight shift but must respond to any emergency calls (i.e., alarms going off, families locked out of their rooms, etc.). Morning procedures include opening the house for the day, taking out the trash, turning on lights, restocking supplies and opening the office. Day shift staff/volunteers will arrive by 8:00am to relieve the overnight volunteer.

Volunteers cover shifts when our Overnight Staff is on vacation or out sick. Volunteers may cover regular weekend shifts, or occasional/as-needed shifts on weekdays or weekends depending on the individual's availability and preferences. 

Volunteers are required to complete training to learn RMHC protocols and procedures.

The Ronald McDonald Family Room provides an additional resource to the medical services provided to families at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center. Our Family Room, located on the pediatric inpatient floor, is a respite space for families whose children are hospitalized. The room includes a full kitchen, dining area, sitting area with a TV, as well as a washer and dryer. This is a non-clinical, comfortable space for families to relax just a few steps away from their child’s hospital room.

RMHC is looking for compassionate, hospitable, and encouraging volunteers to be ambassadors for Northern Light and RMHC. Volunteers should enjoy working with families, be engaging and friendly, and be able to communicate effectively with families and staff.

Volunteer Responsibilities:
• Welcome families and introduce them to the Family Room.
• Provide a listening ear and encouragement.
• Restock supplies: snacks, coffee, etc.
• Inventory items and communicate needs to Ronald McDonald House staff about room needs. 
• Keep the room tidy, clean, and organized

Shifts are available every day including weekends. Shifts can be flexible and are based on the volunteer's availability. Volunteers will complete the volunteer training requirements for Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center and then work with RMHC staff to learn more about the Family Room.
