Volunteer: Fall 2025: Domestic Violence Helpline Advocate - Volunteer from Home! Are you a good listener? Are you comfortable talking on the phone? Do you have a passion for helping others? If you answered yes to these questions, we have an opportunity that may be perfect for you! Family Violence Project (FVP) has an ongoing need for volunteer advocates to help answer our 24-hour helpline for those affected by domestic violence. As a volunteer advocate on the helpline, you will make a difference in people’s lives by volunteering from the comfort of your home. Do you worry that you won't know what to say? FVP offers a free training (the Core Advocacy, Intervention, Response and Ethics Training) to help prepare you for this role; also, a staff person will be available to assist you by phone while you are volunteering. Throughout the training, participants will learn about the complex issue of domestic violence, the services of Family Violence Project, and how to talk with callers and help them create safety plans. Although successful completion of the training is required for this volunteer role, no other experience is necessary. Once the training is successfully completed, and after a brief orientation period, volunteers will take helpline calls from home with support available by phone. Most volunteers contribute 9 to 15 hours per month by covering one weekend day (9 hour) or weeknight (15 hour) helpline shift. The next 45-hour volunteer training will be held in Fall 2025. While the training dates have not yet been scheduled, we anticipate a mid or late October start date and plan to offer the training as a live-participation, online training. If you are interested in participating in this opportunity, you must be 18 years of age or older, complete a volunteer interview prior to being accepted to the training, and pass background checks (including fingerprinting) prior to volunteering. While the training itself is free of charge, we ask for a $25 donation (to help cover the cost of background checks) from those who are financially able to provide it; the inability to donate will not prevent a person from participating! If you would like to be added to the contact list for the Fall 2025 training, or would like more information about this training and volunteer opportunity, please contact Jaime Mooney, Advocacy Director, at jmooney@familyviolenceproject.org or 207-623-8637 x302. Red Cross is 90% staffed by volunteers - they are our workforce! Volunteers serve all up and down our organization and, as a recruiter, I can't do it alone for the whole state of Maine. In my role as the one and only full-time Volunteer Recruitment Specialist for the state, I need volunteers myself! How about you? The recruitment effort takes many forms. There's internet research, online postings, virtual events to run, tracking of progress, and even events to attend. Also, almost all of this can be done from your choice location as long as you have connectivity. The exception would be if you want to go out in your community (like to post flyers) or decide to attend a local event for me. To learn more, email VolunteerNNE@redcross.org. Volunteer: Literacy Tutors for AdultsEvery day, Literacy Volunteers hears from adults who want to be able to read, write, and/or speak and understand English better. Their requests are urgent. In many ways, their lives depend on it since better literacy affords a higher standard of living, access to better information to make decisions, and a sense of belonging--all things we value. Volunteer tutors are needed to help adult students develop these skills. The volunteers feel great knowing that they are helping another on such a fundamental level. If you enjoy teaching, coaching, or mentoring and are patient, empathetic, and flexible, we want you to join our team. Volunteer tutors receive advance training and then are carefully assigned an adult to help them either improve their reading, writing, and spelling and/or English speaking skills. We support tutor-student pairs with available materials, mentors, and activities. Starting in January 2025, new Tutor Certification will be available entirely online. So an interested tutor can get the training whenever it works for them. To learn more, go to: LVBangor.org/volunteer. Volunteer: Bean Hole Bean MakerLove to cook and love the outdoors? Why not combine them into one glorious experience? The Maine Forest and Logging Museum needs volunteers to make the beans. It's a multi-day affair and involves heavy lifting. The first day has volunteers preparing the ingredients and getting the fires going. The beans go into the ground at the end of that day, which takes 2 strong people and a metal pole. The next day, the beans come out and are served to hungry guests. The specifics of the bean-making job are: get the cooking fire and the bean pit fires going; bring out the bean pots and clean if necessary; soak the dry beans in water until doubled in size; cut the vegetables and measure the other ingredients; parboil the beans until tender; add the other ingredients to the bean pots on the fire; cover and put bean pot into the bean pit; clean up the work area: wash dishes and dispose of waste; put out the cooking fire; put all remaining equipment back into the shed and lock up.If doing this job during Living History Days, the beans for Sunday must be prepared while Saturday's beans are being served. It's a lot of work, but it is rewarding. It's also a good time reminiscent of camping: preparing food outdoors with fires going, in very peaceful setting.

Volunteer: Food Bank Volunteers needed in HampdenDid you know Good Shepherd Food Bank has two distribution center locations? In addition to our flagship location in Auburn, the Food Bank also has a location in Hampden. Volunteer opportunities at the Hampden Distribution Center consists primarily of packing food boxes for two programs, the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) and the Community Health & Hunger Program (CHHP). The Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) works to improve the health of low-income people at least 60 years of age by supplementing their diets with nutritious USDA commodity foods. The Community Health & Hunger Program (CHHP) provides healthcare partners with pre-packed emergency food bags for direct and immediate distribution to those who identify as food insecure. We may also ask our volunteers to help with occasional/seasonal produce inspection. Our Hampden location welcomes volunteers Monday-Thursday: 8am-4pm and Friday: 8am-12pm. There is no minimum time commitment required for volunteering. For more information please email Gina Bingham, Volunteer Engagement Coordinator, at gbingham@gsfb.org or call at (207) 344-1253.
