Who We Are

APPLE, the Association to Promote and Protect the Lubec Environment, was formed in 2005 to strengthen and foster environmentally sound tourism and economic development in the Lubec area. The "environment" in our name refers to Lubec's historical, cultural, ecological, and economic qualities and influences. APPLE was incorporated in 2005. Tours given by local residents started that summer. In addition to receiving the website www.VisitLubecMaine.com in 2008 we also opened the Info Stop every summer through 2011. Since 2008, APPLE has also spearheaded a Lubec-wide Coastal Cleanup, participating in the Maine State "Maine Coast Week" and Ocean Conservancy's data collection. For three years, building upon the Coastal Cleanup, we issued a Trash from the Sea Art Challenge, together with the Lubec Memorial Library and then with Lubec Landmarks, to inspire creativity that would make it obvious that the sea is downstream for all our trash. We expanded the arts and culture information available about Lubec, Campobello, and Trescott on written materials and our websites. Since 2012 we have gradually been converting our tours to audio recordings, making the tours self-guided for easier accessibility.

What We Do

APPLE began providing tours in Lubec in 2005 (see www.ToursofLubecandCobscook.com) - History and Sightseeing of Lubec and Campobello, Explore the Intertidal Shore, and Bogs and the Ice Age - in order to introduce this area and its uniqueness and what makes it special, to tourists. In 2008 we were given the website www.VisitLubecMaine.com. Together with the website, our tours and a tourist map and information sheet we are promoting Lubec while urging tourists to protect what they find here.
