Who We Are

Since it's founding in 1976, Habitat for Humanity International and its local affiliates have helped more than 29 million people build or improve the place they call home and find strength, stability & independence through its housing program.  Open to all, Habitat for Humanity was founded as an ecumenical, non-profit ministry based on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a simple, durable place to live in dignity and safety. Today, Habitat for Humanity is at work in every state of the United States and in more than 70 other countries around the world.

A local affiliate of HFHI, Hancock County Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1989 and works to fulfill the mission and mandates of Habitat International in our community.

What We Do

Hancock County Habitat partners with economically disadvantaged individuals and families to build homes and hope. Through monetary & in-kind donations, volunteer labor, & each homeowner’s “sweat equity", we are able to construct simple, decent, affordable, market-quality homes which are then financed under affordable mortgage loans.  Monthly traditional mortgage payments and [in the near future] monies received through third-party financing at closing are recycled back into what Habitat calls “The Fund for Humanity”, which helps support the long-term sustainability of our programs.  By offering training in budgeting and financial literacy, teaching home maintenance and repair throughout the build process, and modeling positive community engagement, Habitat helps ensure that our partner families are well prepared to make the transition to becoming successful long-term homeowners.

Hancock County Habitat for Humanity has an open-door policy. All who believe that everyone needs a decent, affordable place to live are welcome to help with the work and apply for housing regardless of race, color, religion, age, handicap, gender, gender expression, orientation, political views or any of the other distinctions that too often divide people. E.H.O.
