You don’t have to know how your cell phone works to volunteer at The Telephone Museum! But you might want to learn how to be a switchboard operator who will connect visitors to big, wooden hand-crank phones - attached the wall! - to have a conversation. Or you might want to make a big noise by operating giant (but friendly) electro-mechanical switches that replaced human operators when dial telephones took over.
Or, if you prefer, you can greet visitors at the door. Many are from the state of Maine, others from around the country and the world. People from all walks of life come to visit this surprising museum of the wired telephone network to learn about the history of telecommunications - or just out of curiosity. You can learn to use The Square to ring up admissions and sales and find out about the unusual, telephone-themed items for sale in the Gift Shop.
If you like to work on machines and piecing together intricate parts, there’s a special place for you. Restoring, maintaining and trouble-shooting are a big part of the volunteer experience at The Telephone Museum. This work keeps the telephones, switchboards and other equipment in working order for Tour Guides to demonstrate and visitors to use.
